About
Melina Oikonomou was born and raised in Athens, Greece, where she studied Fashion and Costume Design. She gained her Bachelor of Arts in Theatre Design from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Wales, UK, and her Master of Fine Arts in Scenic Design from the Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL.
Her work for the theatre, opera, television, and cinema includes, but is not limited to, costume design, set design, poster art, make up design, puppetry, mask design, and scenic painting. She has worked in many countries including Greece, Cyprus, the United Kingdom, and the United States with professional and community theatre companies, as well as in children's theatre workshops, and specialized theatre organizations for people with mobility challenges. Her experience also includes teaching both elementary level in Greece and college level in the United States.
Because of her heritage, Melina fell in love with classic theatre early on, but when she was introduced to different theatre art forms, that love became a passion for theatre in general. Due to her interest in fashion, she initially pursuit a career in costume design. As she got more and more into the theatre world however, her unique sense of aesthetic deriving from her Greek background along with her affinity in painting contributed to her newly found interest in scenic design, which later became her main professional focus.
Having such a diverse professional experience, Melina succeeds in being highly adaptable to any challenge that might arise in the theatre arena, weather that is design or people related. Her colleagues describe her as pleasant to work with and always having a positive attitude.
